Description

Details

A winner of The Open Championship on three occasions, Gary Player’s 2nd and most cherished victory came at The 97th Open at Carnoustie in 1968. In a star-studded field and paired with Jack Nicklaus in the final round, Player showed all the skill and composure that has made him one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Player said Carnoustie was the hardest Open course he had played but it was here he struck one of the greatest shots of his career. Joint leader with Billy Casper and Bob Charles, Player reached ‘Spectacles’, the par-5 14th hole. Player struck a majestic three wood into the strong headwind with telling accuracy, the ball threading between the twin bunkers protecting the front of the green, to finish just nine inches from the hole. The resulting eagle could not be matched by a Nicklaus birdie. After coming within inches of holing a 60-foot putt on the 17th, Player parred the the last, posting a final round of 73 for a four round one over par total of 289, finishing two in front of former Champion Golfers Bob Charles and Jack Nicklaus and three ahead of American Billy Casper.
